MDMA and the brain

MDMA affects the brain by increasing the activity of at least three neurotransmitters (the chemical messengers of brain cells): serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.



MDMA causes these neurotransmitters to be released from their storage sites in neurons, resulting in increased neurotransmitter activity. Also because it involves serotonin that means it affects sleep,mood and appetite.These problems can occur soon after taking the drug or, sometimes, even days or weeks after taking MDMA. They tested on to see if MDMA is harmful to animals brains and they found out that only 4 days caused damage to serotonin nerve terminals that was still evident 6 to 7 years later. And now they are still in the process to see if humans are the same.
